Panko Breaded Cauliflower Bites

I find myself reaching for recipes like this when I want something satisfying but don’t feel like spending ages in the kitchen. These cauliflower bites are crispy on the outside, tender on the inside, and easy to throw together. You can also change up the seasonings or serve them with whatever dip you have on hand.

Fun Facts

Did you know cauliflower comes in different colours? Besides the familiar white variety, you can find purple and orange cauliflower, too. Their colours come from different natural plant pigments, including anthocyanins in purple cauliflower and carotenoids in orange cauliflower.

Cauliflower belongs to the Brassica oleracea family, along with broccoli, cabbage, kale, and Brussels sprouts. These vegetables contain various nutrients and plant compounds, including glucosinolates, which researchers continue to study for their roles in human health.

Health Benefits

Cauliflower panko bites are a tasty way to enjoy more vegetables. Cauliflower provides vitamin C, folate, and fibre, along with plant compounds that are being studied for their potential health benefits.

Cauliflower is also relatively low in calories and carbohydrates, so it can fit into a range of eating styles, including lower-carb diets. Its fibre contributes to digestive health, too. Like other vegetables in the cruciferous family, cauliflower contains glucosinolates, which can be broken down into compounds such as sulforaphane. Researchers are still studying how these compounds may influence health.

How To Make Them

Making panko cauliflower bites is pretty straightforward. Start by cutting the cauliflower into bite-sized florets. Dip each piece into flour, then beaten egg, and finally coat it in panko breadcrumbs. Arrange the coated cauliflower on a baking sheet and bake until the coating is golden and crispy and the cauliflower is tender inside.

For the best crunch, make sure the cauliflower is dry before you start coating it. Too much moisture can make it harder for the breading to stick. A light spray or drizzle of oil over the panko coating also helps it turn golden and crispy in the oven.

Give the florets some space on the baking sheet so the hot air can circulate around them. If they’re packed too closely together, they’re more likely to steam than crisp up. You can also switch up the seasonings and dips depending on what you’re in the mood for. Buffalo sauce, barbecue sauce, or a simple garlic dip would all work well. If you prefer a crunchier coating, you can deep-fry the breaded cauliflower in hot oil until golden brown and cooked through.
