Creamed Corn with Pork and Rice (粟米肉粒飯)

Today we’re making a classic comfort dish from Taiwanese cooking — Creamed Corn with Pork and Rice (粟米肉粒飯). It’s also a popular go‑to in many Hong Kong cafés. In about 30 minutes, you can have a cozy, family‑friendly meal that’s simple and satisfying.

This dish always brings back memories for me. Growing up, I loved the smell of it cooking — it was one of my mom’s regulars because it was quick, easy, and everyone enjoyed it. Now, it’s something I make for my family too, and my kids look forward to it the same way I did.

History and Origins

Creamed Corn with Pork and Rice, known as 粟米肉粒飯 (sù mǐ ròu lì fàn) in Mandarin, has a rich history steeped in Taiwanese culinary culture. Its origins trace back to humble beginnings, where families relied on simple yet hearty meals to nourish themselves.

Over the years, this dish has become a cornerstone of Taiwanese cuisine, cherished for its comforting flavours and cultural significance. As a testament to its popularity, it’s a dish that has stood the test of time, passed down through generations, and cherished in countless households.

What makes this dish so interesting is how adaptable it is. While it stays true to its roots, different regions and families often put their own spin on it. Some might add a little spice for a kick, while others might highlight specific ingredients, giving it a personal touch that makes it even more special.

Ingredients and Cooking Process

Let’s get into making this simple comfort meal that my whole family loves. As a parent, it’s pretty special cooking this with my kids — their excitement reminds me of how I felt when my mom made it for us growing up.

You really don’t need much for this dish. Just cook the meat with creamed corn, spoon it over steamed rice, and you’ve got a sweet and savoury meal that hits the spot every time. It comes together in about 15 minutes, which makes it perfect for those busy weeknights when everyone’s schedule is packed.

My mom always used minced pork, and that’s still my go‑to, though sometimes I’ll swap in ground turkey or chicken for a lighter version. Still, you can’t beat the flavour of pork — the extra fat adds that juicy texture and richness.

Here’s all you need to get started: creamed corn, minced pork, and rice. That simple trio makes a comforting, satisfying meal every time.

* 1lb minced pork, ground chicken or ground turkey
* I like to marinate the meat for at least an hour with some minced garlic, soya sauce, sesame oil and a hint of white pepper
* 1- 2 cans of cream style corn
* I like to throw in some frozen veggies as well

Now, time for the fun part – cooking it all up! Pop that minced pork into a pan and let it sizzle until it’s nice and tender. Just imagine the delicious smell filling up your kitchen – that’s when you know something seriously good is cooking. Once your pork is looking spot on, toss in the creamy corn. Pour it in and give it all a good mix.

Seasoning time! Sprinkle in a bit of this, dash in a bit of that – whether it’s a pinch of salt, a twist of pepper, or a splash of soy sauce (if that’s your thing) – make it taste just right for you. I also like to add in some frozen veggies.  Soon enough, you’ll have a mouthwatering, creamy dish that’s impossible to resist.

Don’t forget the seasoning! Add a sprinkle of this and a dash of that – whether it’s a pinch of salt, a twist of pepper, or maybe a hint of soy sauce (if that’s your jam) and you’ll soon have a savoury, creamy dish that’s simply irresistible. And now for the finale – spoon that tasty mix over a bowl of piping hot, fluffy rice. The creamy corn, the savoury pork – all hanging out together on a bed of rice is just simply delicious.

This dish is very basic, tasty and affordable. Get your pots and pans ready and dive into your kitchen to whip up some Creamed Corn with Pork and Rice. Thanks a bunch for hanging out on this tasty journey with me! Keep cooking, keep exploring new flavours, and let the deliciousness from different cultures inspire your kitchen adventures!
