Little Toasty Treats

My kids love these little French toast bites. They’re golden and a little crispy on the outside, with a soft middle, and they’re easy to eat with your fingers. I usually make them for breakfast, but they’re also nice to have around when the kids are hungry and looking for something to snack on.

How I Started Making French Toast Bites

I first came across French toast bites during the pandemic when I was spending more time at home and looking for new recipes to try. I found a recipe online and thought my kids might like it, so I gave it a try. They ended up loving them, and I’ve been making them ever since.

I’ve tried different toppings and flavours over the years, but I still like the simple cinnamon sugar version. It’s easy to make, and the kids are happy with it. If I’m feeling like switching things up, I’ll try different toppings or turn them into little sandwiches with something sweet in the middle.

Let’s Make Some French Toast Bites!

You only need a few basic ingredients for this recipe: bread, eggs, milk, vanilla, and a little cinnamon and nutmeg if you like. Cut the bread into cubes, dip them in the egg mixture, and cook them in a pan until they’re golden. Once they’re done, toss them in cinnamon sugar while they’re still warm. I like to keep the cooked bites in the oven at a low temperature while I finish the rest, so they’re warm when it’s time to eat.

Ingredients:

  • Bread slices (about 3-4 slices, depending on serving size)
  • 3 eggs
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • Pinch of salt
  • 2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon (optional)
  • 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg (optional)
  • Butter for frying
  • Berries (Optional)

Instructions:

  1. Begin by cutting the bread into bite-sized cubes or fun shapes.
  2. In a bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, vanilla extract, and cinnamon (if using).
  3. Dip each bread cube into the egg mixture, ensuring they’re fully coated, but don’t soak it.
  4. Heat a skillet or pan over medium heat and add a touch of butter or oil.
  5. Place the coated bread cubes onto the skillet, cooking them for a few minutes on each side until they turn golden and crispy.
  6. Remove from pan and dip into the sugar, cinnamon and nutmeg mixture
  7. Place in the oven to keep warm until ready to serve (300 degrees)
  8. Top with berries and maple syrup (optional) – honestly, they’re tasty as is

A little tip: Slightly stale bread tends to work better because it holds its shape when dipped in the egg mixture. You can use whatever bread you have on hand, so there’s no need to buy anything special.

Different Toppings to Try

One thing I like about this recipe is how easy it is to change things up. The cinnamon sugar version is still my favourite, but there are plenty of other options if you want to try something different. For toppings, you could add fresh berries, powdered sugar, whipped cream, or a drizzle of chocolate sauce. Peanut butter and banana would be good, too.

I’ve also made little French toast sandwiches with Nutella and sliced strawberries between two bites. They’re a fun treat, especially when the kids have friends over and if you prefer something savoury, you could skip the sugar and try adding cheese or serving the bites alongside crispy bacon. I haven’t tried every combination myself, but it’s an easy recipe to experiment with.

How to Serve Them

Most of the time, I just put the French toast bites on a plate and let everyone help themselves. Add some fruit and maple syrup on the side, and breakfast is ready.

If you’re serving them to a group, you could put toothpicks beside the plate and offer a few dips, like maple syrup or chocolate sauce. You could even set out different toppings and let everyone choose their own. They’re also easy to bring to a brunch or serve when the kids have friends over. Since they’re small enough to eat by hand, there’s no need to sit down with a knife and fork.
