One evening at a local restaurant, we were casually looking through the menu when something caught my eye under the drinks section: Espresso Rock.
Now, I’m definitely not a coffee expert, but I was immediately curious. My husband saw my face, knew I’d want to try it, and ordered it so we could share. And honestly? I thought it was such a smart idea. Instead of regular ice melting into the drink and watering everything down, the coffee itself was frozen into espresso cubes. As they melted, the drink stayed rich and flavourful.
When the waitress brought it over, I couldn’t help but wonder what I was about to taste. At first, I thought it was just some fancy chocolate espresso treat. But as I poured hot milk over the ball, we were both surprised to discover it was actually a solid shot of espresso. The ball began to melt slowly, releasing this amazing rich aroma and flavour, no watered-down ice involved.

After trying it out, my husband said he enjoyed it, but we couldn’t shake off the fact that it was quite pricey for a drink. That got me thinking: if I could whip up hot cocoa bombs at home, why not take a crack at making this espresso treat too? Since my husband seemed to enjoy it, I was even more motivated to give it a shot.
I hopped online to see if I could find any molds to make them. After a quick search on Amazon, I grabbed a Tovolo sphere ice mold, ready to dive into this DIY project. The excitement built as I eagerly awaited its arrival, imagining how it would all come together. I was also excited to film the process, so I started brainstorming how I’d set everything up to capture it just right.
I borrowed my husband’s Nespresso machine and basically turned the kitchen into my own little coffee lab for the afternoon. I added a few cozy touches, set up my camera, and started making espresso shots one after another to fill the mold completely.
It took more espresso than I expected, but the whole process was honestly way easier, and way more fun, than I thought it would be. And while everything was brewing, the kitchen smelled incredible, which somehow made the whole thing feel even more exciting.

When the moment finally arrived to see the results, I was excited to find the espresso balls turned out perfectly shaped, even if they were a little bigger than I expected for our glasses. I was happy everything went smoothly and even made a few extra to keep in the freezer for when my husband wants one. There’s something nice about having homemade espresso on hand, especially when all it takes is dropping a frozen ball into your cup.
